Book Signing and Discussion:

“A Story from a Basket Maker’s Daughter - The Hill”

- Maryann Proper

Please welcome storyteller and author Maryann Proper for a book signing and discussion of her just released book “A Story from a Basket Maker’s Daughter The Hill”. This fascinating story, part family memoir, part historical tale, highlights the true story of the famous, iconic Taghkanic Baskets and the secretive community that produced them.

Saturday, October 1,

10am-12noon. Talk scheduled for 10:30am

Taghkanic Town Hall, 909 SR 82, Ancram

(Town of Taghkanic)

The community, who lived in The Hill, were descendants of Palatine Germans who immigrated from England to Livingston Manor, working as indentured servants for Robert Livingston. These people eventually fled into the surrounding hills where they lived under the radar for generations, first out of fear of retribution from the Crown and then as a way of life.

During this time, the members of this community, who had originally honed the craft of basket making in Germany, passed this craft from generation to generation. These beautiful, distinctive baskets went from functioning tools to highly sought-after collectors’ items.

Come join us for Maryann’s fascinating talk about the rich history of Taghkanic.

See a collection of these rare and coveted baskets provided by local collectors.

Maryann will have signed copies of “The Hill” available for purchase ($20). Beverages and light snacks will be available.
