The Roeliff Jansen Community Library, in partnership with the Copake Grange, and the Ancram, Copake, Hillsdale, and Taghkanic Climate Smart Committees, and with help from Repair Café Hudson Valley, is planning southeast Columbia County’s first Repair Café, scheduled for Saturday, September 30, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Library’s Community Room.
Repair Cafés are taking off here in the northeast and are modeled after similar Repair Cafés in Europe, where the concept had its beginning. The philosophy is simple: let’s keep items out of the landfill. Instead, let’s fix, restore, recycle, and reuse! This is good for us and excellent for our planet.
Repair Cafés are community efforts and community events. In order to make them work, they depend upon the volunteer labor of skilled community members. And we know you are out there! We are searching for volunteers to help with this project. We need “fixers,” people with the ability to fix specific things, to donate a bit of their time for the benefit of all. Can you repair bicycles, small appliances, lawn mowers and small engines, jewelry, or lamps? Can you sharpen knives, help with computer problems, or mend and sew (hand or machine)? If you have a skill and are willing to share your expertise by helping others, please join us on Saturday, September 30. Refreshments and gratitude provided to all volunteers.
To add your name to our “Fixer” list, please call the Library at 518-325-4101 or email Fran Colombo at outreach@roejanlibrary.org.
