Keeping Taghkanic Safe: The 2027 Fire District Budget

The Taghkanic Fire District Commissioners have proposed a 2027 budget that continues to prioritize public safety, responsible spending, and long-term planning for the equipment our volunteer firefighters need to protect our community.

The proposed budget totals $593,012, an increase of 2% over 2026, consistent with New York State's property tax cap. Of that amount, $541,742 will come from Taghkanic taxpayers, with the remaining $51,271 contributed by the Town of Gallatin for fire protection services.

The district's largest long-term priority remains replacing Engine 56-20, a 2002 fire truck that has served the community for nearly 25 years. With a new fire engine expected to cost approximately $1.5 million, planning ahead is essential.

The district continues its commitment to setting aside $200,000 annually toward purchasing a replacement truck. By building up savings over several years, the commissioners hope to minimize the amount the district will eventually need to borrow, reducing interest costs and the financial burden on taxpayers.

Beyond saving for the new truck, the budget supports the ongoing costs of operating the Fire District, including equipment maintenance, insurance, and other essential expenses.

The commissioners recognize that rising costs are putting pressure on household budgets, and we are committed to doing our part to keep property taxes as low as possible. Even as the cost of firefighting equipment and operations continues to climb, our goal remains the same: ensuring that Taghkanic's volunteer firefighters have the equipment and resources they need while being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars.

A public hearing on the proposed budget will be held on Tuesday, October 20 at 7:30 PM at the Fire Station, 631 Old Route 82. Click here to review the proposed 2027 Fire District Budget. Residents are encouraged to review the budget and share any questions with the Fire District Commissioners.
