Mega Tree Planting Event at new
Taghkanic Community Forest
You've probably heard about the new Community Forest that will be located in the town of Taghkanic. This is a 500+ acre piece of land with great conservation value. It has some beautiful woodlands, a large pond and it’s a key piece of the Taghkanic Headwaters watershed. The Columbia Land Conservancy is purchasing the land with a grant from the NYS Water Quality Improvement Program. The exciting part is that while the CLC will own this land, it will become the first community forest in our area. That is, residents of Taghkanic and neighboring towns will not only be able to enjoy the forest, but also will make key decisions about, and be responsible for managing the property.

To kick off this amazing project the CLC and other conservation partners are planning a huge volunteer tree planting day on Saturday, May 17. Volunteers will be planting more than 1,500 trees in a roughly 3-acre open area that will be enclosed by deer fencing. It’s going to be lots of fun and a great way for folks to meet and reconnect with neighbors, and be a part of your community. You don’t need to be an expert tree planter or gardener to participate. There will be opportunities that day for folks to express interest in becoming land stewards or serve on the management committee for the community forest.
The event will be held from 10AM to 2PM, with plenty of food and fun. If you plan to attend, please check out more details and register at: https://columbialand.org/event/volunteer-season-kick-off/
Join in this meaningful community event!
See you on May 17!
