Proposed Changes to DEC Hunting Regulations

ree

Given the high degree of interest in the deer management issue during our recent Forest In Your Backyard Taghkanic Talks sessions, we wanted to inform you of DEC's (Department of Environmental Conservation) proposed changes to hunting regulations. If you would like to have your voice heard on this issue, the email from Eli Arnow below outlines a mechanism for doing that. Eli has also provided a template email for anyone who would like to express their support for the proposed changes. NOTE: Deadline for submissions is August 18th.

Friends and colleagues,

I am writing to ask you to consider submitting a public comment voicing your support for NYS Department of Environmental Conservation proposed hunting regulation changes.

I'm attaching a sample letter: feel free to review, make any edits, and submit on your own behalf or that of your organization by the deadline of August 18th. Instructions for submitting your comment are in the attached document.

These regulation changes are a small but meaningful step towards addressing the crisis of deer overabundance in NY. The most salient proposed change eliminates restrictions on the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP), giving DMAP participants greater capacity around deer management.

Other, minor changes increase opportunity for youth hunters and update tagging and reporting requirements. The full regulation changes are detailed here

We feel that these initial changes could open the door to substantial future regulatory shifts, and it's crucial at this stage for the DEC to hear support for these changes from a wide diversity of voices including and especially those who have historically been underrepresented in decision making around wildlife management.

Please feel free to be in touch if you have any questions or would like to discuss.
