Reminder: Taghkanic Fire District Election Set for December 9

The newly established Taghkanic Fire District will hold its first-ever election on:

ree

This election is an important moment for our community. For the first time, residents will choose the Fire District’s Board of Fire Commissioners, the body responsible for overseeing budgets, long-term planning, equipment needs, and the overall direction of our fire and emergency services.

Five seats are on the ballot, each with staggered one- to five-year terms. Voters will also consider three propositions establishing reserve funds for capital improvements, equipment, and fire apparatus — tools that will help the district plan responsibly for future needs.

Why This Matters

While fire protection may not be something residents think about every day, it is one of the most essential services our town provides. The decisions made now about governance, financial planning, and long-term preparedness will shape how the district operates for years to come. The creation of reserve funds, for example, can help ensure that future boards avoid sudden tax spikes, maintain equipment safely, and replace apparatus on a responsible schedule.

Because this is the district’s first election, the community is helping set the foundation for how the fire service will be governed moving forward. Participating in this process ensures the board reflects the community it serves and that residents have a voice in major decisions affecting safety, infrastructure, and financial stewardship.

Who Can Vote

Any resident who lives within the Taghkanic Fire District and was registered to vote in Columbia County by November 17 is eligible to cast a ballot.

Looking Ahead

Whether you have lived here your whole life or moved to Taghkanic recently, this election offers a meaningful opportunity to take part in shaping the future of your fire and emergency services. Community engagement now helps create a strong, transparent, and well-governed Fire District for everyone.
