Taghkanic residents celebrated Joyce Thompson for her years of service to the community on Sunday, August 25, 2024, which coincidentally, was Joyce’s birthday. More than 70 people came together to show the love and respect they have for Joyce.

Joyce became a full-time resident of Taghkanic in 2005, and over the years she devoted her time and energy to help make Taghkanic a better place to live. She served on the Taghkanic Town Board for 12 years, as well as the Town’s Zoning Commission, Financial Advisory Committee, Climate Smart Communities Task Force, Conservation Advisory Committee, Digital Communications Committee, Committee to rebuild the highway garage, and the Office for the Aging. She also served as the Town Democratic Chairperson for many years.
Her tireless work and ability to unite the people of the Town of Taghkanic was praised by Town Supervisor Ryan Skoda, who said he didn’t hesitate for a moment when he named her as his Deputy Supervisor after she left the Town Board.
The event, held at the Taghkanic Fire House, was “pot luck” with lots of great food and a cake beautifully decorated by Joyce’s friends. Rather than gifts, donations were accepted for the Columbia County Recovery Kitchen, per Joyce’s request.
