Taghkanic Board passes zoning regulations for STRs / ADUs

staff

In the past few weeks, the Town Board of Taghkanic passed two new pieces of zoning legislation. The first of these, Local Law #1 of 2024: Short Term Rental Regulations, describes the types of allowed Short Term Rentals and the terms under which they are permitted. It also describes the processes for their registration and inspection, as well as the associated registration fees. A copy of the STR law can be found on the town website: https://taghkanic.org/policy_docs#laws.  A copy of the STR Application form can be found under Forms and Applications on the same web page.

The second law, Local Law #2 of 2024: Accessory Dwelling Unit Law, permits and regulates the existence of a second dwelling unit, subordinate to the Principal Dwelling Unit, with provisions for cooking, eating, sanitation and sleeping, either in an existing single-family dwelling or in a separate accessory structure on the same lot as the existing single-family dwelling, for use as a complete, independent living facility. Although this law was part of the overall zoning regulation update currently in progress, it was selected for accelerated consideration to ensure the eligibility of Taghkanic residents for grant funds under that New York State Plus One ADU Grant Program, if and when Columbia County receives an additional round of funding later this year. A copy of the ADU law can be found on the town website:  https://taghkanic.org/policy_docs#laws.
