Mark your calendars. The first election for the newly formed Taghkanic Fire District will take place:
Tuesday, December 9, 2025
6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Taghkanic Town Hall | 909 State Route 82
This marks an important milestone for the community as residents elect the district’s board of fire commissioners for the first time. There are five seats on the ballot, each serving staggered terms ranging from one to five years.

Voters will also consider three propositions to create long-term reserve funds for capital improvements, equipment, and fire apparatus — financial tools that will help the district plan responsibly for future needs and investments.
The creation of the fire district means that fire protection is no longer funded through the town budget. Instead, the district now manages its own budget and tax levy — a structure that brings Taghkanic in line with how nearly all other towns in Columbia County organize their fire services.
Anyone who lives in the Taghkanic Fire District and is registered to vote in Columbia County by November 17 is eligible to cast a ballot.
Residents interested in running for one of the open commissioner seats must submit their names in writing to the Fire District Secretary by 5:00 p.m. on November 19.
Please Vote!
This first election represents a key step in shaping how fire protection and emergency response services are governed in Taghkanic for years to come.
