In March of 1965, the area covered by the Taghkanic Fire Company was extended to meet the Ancram Town line, the Copake Town line and the Craryville Fire District line.
In the early 1990's the Fire Company began to seek property in the eastern part of the annexed area for another fire house to provide a quicker response time to this portion of town.
Local landowner Anthony Senerchia learned of the Fire Company's search and generously donated a parcel of land with a two bay garage at the intersection of CR 10 and CR 27. The garage, originally built by the Taconic Hills School District to house two school buses, was repurposed and the first fire truck to roll out of new Taghkanic Station 2 was a 1959 GMC utility truck. Fire company members had to drain the water out of that truck over the winter because the garage was unheated.
In June 1998 the original structure was demolished and replaced with the building that exists today, with much of the work performed by members of the Fire Dept. The official ribbon cutting ceremony was September 13, 1998, with Mr. Senerchia and his family in attendance, performed by Town Supervisor Elizabeth Young.
The first truck to respond out of of the new building was a 1969 Mack Pumper - and that truck was in service until 2006, when it was replaced with a new International/KME pumper which is still in service today.
Last Saturday, the Fire Company officially recognized Mr. Senerchia's generosity to our community by hosting a celebration during which an official plaque was unveiled. Mr. Senerchia and his son John attended the ceremony along with more than 40 members of the Fire Company and community.
Taghkanic thanks Tony Senerchia for his generosity and commitment to the community, and to the members of the Taghkanic Fire Company for all they do, which goes far beyond responding to emergency calls.
