Board votes to honor Purple Heart Recipients, Taghkanic becomes a "Purple Heart Town"

COLUMBIA COUNTY, NEW YORK


RESOLUTION NO. 10 - 2020


At a regular meeting of the Town Board of the Town of Taghkanic, Columbia County, New York, held at Taghkanic Town Hall Taghkanic, New York, on the 10 day of February, 2020 at 7:00 o’clock p.m., there were:


PRESENT: Ryan Skoda Supervisor

Elizabeth Craig Board Member

Kara Gilmore Board Member

Linda Swartz Board Member

Joyce Thompson Board Member

ABSENT:


Board Member Joyce Thompson offered the following resolution and moved its adoption:


WHEREAS, the Town Board of the Town of Taghkanic has great admiration and the utmost gratitude for all of the men and women who have selflessly served their country and this community by joining the military; and


WHEREAS, the Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in present use and was initially created as the Badge of Military’ Merit by General George Washington in 1782; and


WHEREAS, the Purple Heart was the first American service award or decoration made available to the common soldier and is specifically awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who have been wounded or paid the ultimate sacrifice in combat with a declared enemy of the United States of America; and


WHEREAS, the mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to foster an environment of goodwill among the combat-wounded veteran members and their families, promote patriotism, support legislative initiatives, and most importantly — make sure we never forget; and


WHEREAS, the Town of Taghkanic appreciates the sacrifices our Purple Heart recipients made in defending our freedoms and believe it is important that we acknowledge them for their courage and show them the honor and support they have earned.


NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AS FOLLOWS:

1. That the Town of Taghkanic is a Purple Heart Town.

2. That the Town of Taghkanic hereby recognizes the sacrifices that the Purple Heart recipients have made in defending our freedoms and acknowledges their service and courage while protecting our country.


BE IT ALSO RESOLVED that the Town Supervisor is herein authorized to execute and sign any documents necessary to effectuate this resolution


Seconded by Board Member Elizabeth Craig and duly put to a vote which resulted as follows:

The Resolution having been approved by a majority of the Town Board, the same was declared duly adopted by the Supervisor of the Town of Taghkanic.
