The Columbia Land Conservancy has a new property in Taghkanic - The Taghkanic Community Forest. The 500-acre forest is part of a much bigger forest – the mid-Hudson Wildlife Corridor. This Corridor is incredibly special, and one of only two of its kind east of the Mississippi River. Its roots stretch deep into Southern Appalachia, and extend all the way into Canada. The stewardship of this Forest will be overseen by the CLC in conjunction with the Taghkanic Community Forest Advisory Committee - a group of volunteers, many from Taghkanic, who are developing an overall vision and plan for the Forest, including its operation and maintenance, public access and governance.

Let’s make volunteer history! Last year, nearly 100 volunteers gathered to plant hundreds of native trees and shrubs at the Taghkanic Community Forest. This year, we’ll get the site ready for its big day – opening to the public June 6 as part of National Trails Day! Can we make the party even bigger? Come and see what the dedicated volunteers who steward this forest have already accomplished, join in and help do more - and see what's possible when a community comes together.

Lunch will be provided at noon, along with an overview of the property, plans for opening, and opportunities to support the long-term care of the public site. Volunteers are welcome to stay as long as they can, but registration is required to plan accordingly for lunch!

What to expect: There will be jobs for all experience levels and abilities!  Activities may include clearing trails, installing signage, removing invasive weeds, and maintaining the saplings and fencing installed during last year’s kickoff. Volunteers will receive training specific to their roles. Following registration, the address and directions to the Taghkanic property will be sent to participants.

What to bring: Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear, and bring water, work gloves, any favorite tools, and sunscreen. Additional work gloves and tools will be available to borrow if needed!

What not to bring: Please, no dogs.
